about

A year ago I released Woolgatherer's Pond (link below), an album that explored a made up world of mine through childlike eyes. Obscura is it's sister album, it's about adolescence, growing up and taking the good memories of your past forward into the future, the world is darker and more solemn but light still exists

"It could be hard to pin down what sets Shye apart from the countless other ambient-artists on bandcamp, if it wasn't so staggeringly obvious. Designed as the obvious mirror-image of Woolgatherers Pond, Shye takes the childlike curiosity and dealing with heavy drama of that album and paints it in a heavy dose of maturity, adulthood and darkness. The soundscapes are decidedly more dark, somber and restrained, with a bigger focus on gentle pianos, cleverly implemented field recordings and gloomy melodies. And, as always, her sounds are just so beautiful, so engaging and so enveloping that you kinda don't really have a choice but to relate. This album wonderfully captures the feelings of going back while moving forward, revisiting old places that meant a lot to you just to realize they changed, but you can at least keep the memories. You can practically hear the fireflies fly over the lake as the main character sits there one last time during the emotional climax in the middle of the album." - Hurricanslash (RateYourMusic 2020)
